Background
Effective January 1, 2016 California Minimum Wage is $10/hr, making California’s minimum wage among the highest in the nation. Some municipalities in the state, to include the City and County of Los Angeles (unincorporated areas only), have increased the minimum wage well above state law. Now, both the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the SEIU-United Health Care Workers West have filed competing minimum wage increase initiatives to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour statewide. Both initiatives tie future increases to CPI (Consumer Price Index), with SEIU’s measure additionally mandating six paid sick days per year. These initiatives would directly impact Torrance employers, and would be placed on the November 2016 ballot for California voters to decide.
TACC’s Position
TACC is against all minimum wage policies that attempt to raise the minimum wage above its current form. TACC believes minimum wage is a starting wage. Ultimately, low wages are a symptom of low skills; therefore, polices to address low wages need to focus on promoting skill development relevant to workforce demands and technological advancements. TACC is committed to addressing low wages through workforce development strategies.
