The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of Ambassador High School with a ribbon cutting as parents, faculty, and community members listened to congratulatory remarks from former Mayor Frank Scotto and other dignitaries in August of 2013. This independent college preparatory Christian school opened with 27 students.
I returned to the campus two years later where principal Dr. Michael Barker welcomed 67 students to the 2015 – 2016 school year. “The vision for Ambassador High School was to create a school in which students have the freedom to live out their faith while taking college preparatory classes,” stated Dr. Barker.
Students at Ambassador are instructed through Harkness Teaching which is a teaching and learning method involving students seated in a large, oval shape in order to discuss ideas in an encouraging, open-minded environment with only occasional or minimal teacher intervention. I observed a senior class and listened intently as discussion around the oval table was exchanged.
Ambassador High School’s location is unique as it is located inside the LA Galaxy Soccer Center on Maple Ave., in Torrance. The school utilizes previously vacant offices and a reception area. Rooms that were constructed to initially be used as multi-purpose rooms have been modified for use as classrooms.
Ambassador offers an athletic program of flag football, cross country, girls and boys volleyball, girl’s soccer, boys basketball, and boys and girls track and field. “We would like to expand to create a sports related academy and possibly add ice hockey,” commented Dr. Barker.
As I concluded my tour and interview, there is one constant that has remained and that is Dr. Barker’s enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to Ambassador High School. The growth of the school is evident.
Ambassador High School is a valued member of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce and is wished continued success.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator height_2=”25″ height=”25″ show_border=”yes_border”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]posted by
