Thankful for Our Armed Services
This past Tuesday, I had the incredible opportunity to share a Thanksgiving meal at Los Angeles Air Force Base (LA AFB). As part of the Space and Missile Systems Center, LA AFB, Honorary Commander Program, I was partnered with Colonel Thomas Rock, Jr. in March of 2016. The purpose of the Honorary Commander’s program is to identify common areas of interest between the civilian and military communities, assist in promoting community understanding, support the LA AFB mission and to host social events and sponsor entertainment that enhance the morale, camaraderie and esprit de corps of LA AFB personnel and their families.
As I entered the conference room at LA AFB, many were gathered around a table filled with homemade side dishes, desserts, deep fried turkey and Honeybaked ham. Everything smelled and looked so good! Standing in line, I said a prayer of thanks for all the men and women gathered in the room and what they stand for and do for our country. It is so special to share a meal with them. Due to this being my second year in attendance, I was able to ‘catch up’ with those I met last year, as well as meet new “friends” from around the United States.
After our plates were filled, we actually walked to another room to eat. As I have been a part of this program for over 18 months, I know this unit likes to have fun. So, as we were seated Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving was played on two screens. And, new to this year’s luncheon was a side dish and dessert competition. Judging was difficult because there was so much good food.
This was a very special celebration, one I will always remember.
