The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Women in Business co-chairs, Marifrances Trivelli and Claudine Garcia welcomed Councilmembers Sharon Kalani and Bridgett Lewis to address the topic, ‘Balancing Act: Work and Community Service’ at yesterday’s monthly meeting.
Councilmember Kalani, District 4, serves as the Chair of the Employee Relations and Public Safety committee and is a member of the Armed Forces Day Ad Hoc, Citizen Development and Enrichment, and Strategic Planning committees.
Councilmember Lewis, District 2, was appointed to fill the vacant seat of newly elected Mayor George Chen. Lewis serves as Chair of the Strategic Planning committee, and is also a member of the Transportation and Employee Relations and Public Safety committees.
Kalani and Lewis were asked a series of questions from Trivelli, Garcia, and the 36 members in attendance.
Councilmember Lewis encouraged women to run for an elected position whether it be a seat on City Council, a Commissioner or a Board of Education member.
“Women bring uniques perspectives and diverse experiences that can affect positive and lasting change to the political landscape. When women are absent from the political table, our interests are not part of the decision-making process. In exploring opportunities to lead by championing legislation to champion equitable systems for women and families, women can change the conversation. If you do not want to run a campaign for office, I encourage you to join a city commission or committee to make our voices count. It is imperative that we join to make impactful progress and legacies for the future women political leaders” commented Lewis.
Councilmember Kalani offered advice to women seeking to achieve a work life balance. “Be kind to yourself and know your priorities. Ask for help and support and look for opportunities to mentor and teach others. This will give you support and help offer benefits to everyone” said Kalani.
