This May, as we celebrate Small Business Month, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to spotlight Dan Hom of Bravo! Music School. Dan discusses his recent successes, Bravo! Music School’s unique offerings and the challenges as well as opportunities he faces as a small business. Join us as we delve into how this local institution fosters musical talent and community spirit.
1. What’s a big achievement your business has had recently? What lessons did you learn?
Every business is always developing new activities to offer to both existing and new customers. For a music school, we have added more group activities to our core base of private lessons (one student per teacher). We have more of our students working together to perform songs in a group instead of just a solo performance. The group performances can range from duets to 7-piece bands. For our classically trained students on violin and piano, we continue to work on duets and classical string ensembles.
I want to also highlight Smog City Brewery and Taproom a few doors down for giving our students the opportunity to perform in a warm, informal setting with an enthusiastic audience cheering our musicians! We also appreciate the Bread of Life Church a few blocks away near Costco for hosting both the more formal classical performances and the pop-rock recitals.
2. What unique products or services does your business offer that makes Torrance a better place?
Music is more than just learning abstract theory or playing an instrument or singing. Music is about community and getting together to pursue a life-long goal of creating, playing, and appreciating the arts. It’s about meeting others with the same common interest and love for music. Music gives both the musician and the audience an experience that can inspire, motivate, and make us stronger whether we’re playing sports, studying for an exam, or solving problems at work. Our goal is to give Torrance a place that can encourage the arts, provide an education with an extraordinary and talented teaching staff, and be a gathering place for the music community.
3. What are the main challenges and opportunities for your business in Torrance, and how are you handling them?
The main challenge is to give a strong music education at a price point for everyone. Staffing and operating costs have risen dramatically and we believe we can keep our tuition rates low by having a strong operating system to reduce administrative expenses. As with any business, human resources is a significant driver to success and we strive to maintain and attract an extraordinary teaching staff for our students.
As Bravo! Music School continues to enrich the Torrance area community with its innovative and inclusive music programs, it stands out not just as a business, but as a cornerstone of cultural development. By fostering both individual talent and community spirit, Dan Hom and his team exemplify the resilience and creativity that define our local businesses. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to support such an inspiring institution during Small Business Month and beyond. For more information about Bravo!
