The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Los Angeles Airforce Base, launched a program in 2023 that honors military members.
The chamber’s Military Affairs Council (MAC) ‘Hidden Heroes’ program serves to recognize Active-Duty Airmen and Guardians who have contributed to the local community. Contributions include serving on numerous on- and off-duty volunteer activities, military councils, and organizations supporting several morale and welfare events. The chamber will recognize Sergeant Melvin Smith II at the State of the Region.
In May 2022, Sergeant Smith arrived at Los Angeles Air Force Base where he served at both the Space Systems Command Help Desk and the Protocol Office for a year. Sergeant Smith is currently serving under the Space Base Delta 3 Commander as one of the members of the Commander’s Action Group.
Sergeant Smith is being recognized for serving in numerous volunteer activities. His dedication to public service led him to feeding the homeless in the Los Angeles community and teaching weekly Sunday school sessions at his local church. Furthering his commitment to giving back, he completed a 10-day mission to the Philippines where he supplied school materials and over 2,500 lbs. of food to 1,150 children.
In addition to being elected as the president of the Rising 6 private organization, Sergeant Smith also fosters connectedness through a weekly on-base volleyball group that he created and runs in his free time. Sergeant Smith’s courage also led to him diligently responding to a contractor that experienced a stroke outside of his office. Sergeant Smith alerted first responders and was able to provide immediate aid, proving vital to the preservation of the man’s life.
State of the Region will be held on Wednesday, February 21st starting at 12:00 PM at the DoubleTree by Hilton – South Bay.
