This past Tuesday, over 70 students from Shery High School in Torrance were provided the opportunity to visit and tour four businesses to gain insight into the world of work. Hosted by the Torrance Chamber, ‘Business for a Day’ provided students with hands-on experience in manufacturing, the tourism industry and a family and employee owned building supplies and hardware business.
Virco Manufacturing Corporation, King’s Hawaiian, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Torrance-South Bay and Ganahl Lumber provided speakers who shared their career paths with the students. Each business also provided a tour which allowed students the opportunity to not only see how things are made, but also how many different employment positions are available at that site.
In addition to the onsite visits, several chamber members shared their career paths and words of encouragement to students during their lunch break. Speakers included: Melinda Fox, Mike Mims, Torrance Police Officers Anthony McDonald and Kenneth Uh, Bryan Sidoti, Aaron Aalcides, Tania Rios, Eric Smith, Tamala Lewis, Torrance Fire Captain Brian Hudson, Minal Mondkar, Daniel Hawkins, Latrice McGlothin, Javier Jauregui and Sarah Sung.
