[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]Already one of the most ambitious renewable energy mandates in the country, the breadth of California’s Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) program may expand even further. During an unprecedented fourth inaugural address, California Governor Jerry Brown advocated to the state to expand its RPS program to require utility providers to obtain half of its energy procurement from renewable sources by 2030, an increase from the current one-thirds mandate by 2020. Within a few short weeks, the Legislature responded by introducing Assembly Bill 197 in hopes to make the Governor’s RPS goal a reality. Should the Bill pass, California will require investor-owned utilities, electric service providers, and community choice aggregators to obtain half of its energy supply from sources such as wind and sunlight.
The bill’s author, Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) released the following statement on his Assembly webpage, “this bill is about promoting clean energy production and creating jobs in my district as well as throughout the state. The state has already embarked on a path of increased renewable energy production and will need to rigorously evaluate cost effective ways to go further. AB 197 ensures that the necessary long term planning begins now.”
Legislative proposals like AB 197 will continue to shape into their final form up until February 27th, the deadline for new bills to be introduced for this year.
